Samsung Display introduced its new OLED display for smartphones at CES 2023. The screen is UDR 2000 certified and, as the name suggests, offers a brightness of 2,000 nits. Samsung says it will use its new screens on Galaxy S series flagship phones. So we think we can see the UDR 2000 certified OLED on the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
In fact, it’s not the first time we’ve heard of Samsung’s UDR display. News about this has been circulating since June 2022, when the company applied for the UDR trademark. According to Samsung’s statement, the new display has been verified by UL (Underwriter Laboratories), an independent testing and verification firm, and has received UDR 2000 certification.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s screen has a brightness of about 1,750 nits. However, the display panels provided by Samsung for the iPhone 14 Pro series have a brightness of over 2,000 nits. This means that Samsung Display already has the technology to produce displays with a brightness of over 2,000 nits.
So what’s different about the new UDR 2000 OLED? Samsung hasn’t explained the meaning of “UDR”, but we think it’s most likely an acronym for Ultra Dynamic Range. HDR increases the dynamic range of the screen, making content appear more vivid. Because Ultra is considered better than “High”, Samsung’s UDR display may have better dynamic range than displays used in its current phone lineup.
