The interest in foldable smartphones is increasing day by day as a new model comes out. Of course, most of them are offered for sale with a very high price tag compared to their flat-screen competitors. However, with the increasing interest in these devices day by day, foldable screen phones are becoming relatively affordable.
However, in panel technologies, companies such as Samsung continue to maintain their claims and improve existing models. However, we do know that many of them are working on foldable panels as well as rollable ones. However, the latest patent applications indicate that these two technologies will one day be integrated in a single device.
Collapsible and rollable panel technologies combine
After the Galaxy Z Fold, the first foldable phone model, Samsung has managed to capture 95 percent of the market share of this type of device, with the Z Fold 2, Flip and Z Fold 3 models offered for sale. Of course, competition in the market is increasing with the introduction of devices from Oppo and other manufacturers, especially Huawei’s Mate Xs model.
For this reason, Samsung wants to reap the fruits of its investments as soon as possible. Accordingly, the company first filed patent applications for rollable panel designs. However, the emerging leaks point to a new type of device where foldable and rollable screens will be used together.
In fact, we have seen similar technologies before in patent applications of different smartphone and panel manufacturers. However, Samsung’s new concept called Fold and Slide is trying to pull devices towards a market that competes with tablets, not phones.
According to the leaks, Samsung is working on a smartphone that can reach 10 inches and above when the screen is fully opened. We can even interpret this as the company is trying to produce tablets that can be used like phones.
But of course, we can say that these devices are not much different from smartphones, except for the exterior design, due to both the camera systems and the chipset and other hardware parts to be found inside. However, we cannot say that it directly rivals the models in our pocket, like the Flip.
As we understand what Samsung is trying to do in general terms, it will offer an alternative to the smart phones in the market with its structure that can be shrunk to pocket sizes. On the other hand, when it is opened, it will be a new option for users who prefer tablets instead of laptops or computers for business or personal use.
