As you know, this year’s Google I/O developer conference was full of interesting announcements, especially on artificial intelligence and imaging technologies. In fact, the search giant touched on the innovations of Android 14 in addition to the Pixel 7a, Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold models. We can say that the most striking feature among these was the new photo format called Ultra HDR. Now Qualcomm has started working to bring this feature to devices with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Ultra HDR is coming to phones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

For those who don’t know, during I/O 2023, Google introduced Ultra HDR as a new display format. In short, the new format will allow photos to be taken in a backward compatible JPEG format, while offering a dynamic range beyond 8 bits. Thus, we will encounter more detailed shadow and highlight details in smartphone photography.

Also, Google says that images in this format will be backwards compatible with existing apps. The Ultra HDR format can be displayed as an SDR JPEG file even in applications that do not support HDR. We can say that this will make it easier for users to share new format images with others.

According to recent reports, Qualcomm will take advantage of the processor’s 18-bit ISP for the Ultra HDR format on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 devices. At this point, the chip giant is reported to have started working with the Android team. Therefore, as soon as the new feature becomes available, it will be active for phones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It is not yet known whether the Ultra HDR format will be compatible with previous generation devices.
