Sign language used by hearing impaired individuals is one of the most important ways of communicating for these people. Unfortunately, however, very few people know. Deciding to change this situation, Snapchat decided to use SignAll’s artificial intelligence vision technology that can recognize and translate sign language.
One of the lenses will do the spelling work for you when you create individual letters with your fingers. The other will teach you how to say your username in sign language, along with some common words like “love” and “smile”.
The company hopes these new elements will increase awareness and help more people learn a new way to communicate. Making a statement on the subject, Snapchat engineer Jennica Pounds said, “My biggest motivation while developing this project was my son, who had a hard time learning sign language. I believe the project will help families like myself to communicate and grow together. ” he said.
