In a new study by AV-TEST, an independent organization that evaluates and rates antivirus and security suite software for Windows, MacOS and Android operating systems, according to various criteria, 18 antivirus software were tested. In the test, in which the most successful software was determined, the most useful antivirus software surprised the system.

Microsoft Defender tires the system the most

Many people prefer Microsoft Defender as their default antivirus software because it comes as part of the Windows operating system. However, according to a recent evaluation of several different security suites, Microsoft’s product uses more system resources compared to other antivirus programs.

As part of the review, the programs were tested against approximately 12,000 malware samples mixed into 1.5 million files. The 18 security suites tested are: AhnLab, Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender, ESET, F-Secure, G DATA, K7 Computing, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, McAfee, Microsoft Defender, Microworld, Norton, PC Matic, Protected.net and Trend Micro. AV-TEST rated the programs on a total of 6 points for each of the three test categories: protection, performance and usability.

The good news for users is that Microsoft Defender has excellent scores of 6 in the protection and usability categories, but its 5 points in performance put it at 15th place on the list. By the way, as AV-TEST points out, all of those on this list have had pretty good results. AV-TEST states that Microsoft Defender has broken such a score because it consumes much higher system than others.

“All very successful”

On the other hand, 14 of the 18 packs received a Best Product rating with a score of 17.5 or higher. Microsoft Defender, ESET, Microworld and PC Matic scored 17. Six products achieved 18 full points: Avast, Avira, Bitdefender, G DATA, Kaspersky and Trend Micro.

In malware detection, overall, all programs performed well. Of the 18 security solutions evaluated in the test conducted under Windows 10, 12 were able to detect all attackers 100 percent. Those that did not show full success were Malwarebytes, ESET, F-Secure, K7 Computing, Microworld and Protected.net. AhnLab, Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender, G DATA, Kaspersky, McAfee, Microsoft Defender, Norton, PC Matic and Trend Micro received full marks.
