Some English conversations can be quite difficult to understand, especially when accents come into play. This challenge is true even for many native English speakers. Whether you’re wondering or not, a poll among Americans looking at who the most elusive actor is has found the answer to that question: Tom Hardy.
1,200 Americans took part in the survey and were asked about a variety of topics, from the use of subtitles to their opinions on current trends in television sound, from the platforms they use to the devices they prefer to watch them on. The researchers found that nearly 50% of Americans watch TV shows mostly with subtitles, and 89% have used captions in the past, with 55% saying they think TV shows are harder to hear today. Series on streaming services had the highest subtitle usage rate, with 62% of Americans using subtitles from sources like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and others.
Among the most difficult actors to understand, Tom Hardy took the top spot, followed by Sofia Vergara and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Other notable names included Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch and Liam Neeson.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the British series Peaky Blinders was the hardest to understand for US audiences, with Derry Girls and Game of Thrones being the next two shows.
