Jared Mauch, who lives in rural areas of Michigan, USA, established his own fiber internet service provider (ISP) to get rid of both low speed and high cost offers of local internet service providers. According to the reports, it is now trying to expand this service by reaching more people.

Having established its own ISP service, Mauch started to offer this service to 70 customers after its establishment. Last year, the US government allocated a fund to heal the wounds inflicted by the coronavirus. The $350 billion fund created by the USA is transferred to the states and local governments to be used in various fields. For the infrastructure projects of Washtenaw County, Michigan, $71 million has been allocated from this fund. Some of this money is allocated to be used in broadband infrastructure.

What pushes Jared Mauch to this process is the internet options available to him. AT&T could only offer it 1.5 Mbps DSL internet, while Comcast charged $50,000 to take its service to Mauch’s home. Mauch said that if they offered $10,000, he would accept it. Meanwhile, most of the town’s residents were using Comcast internet, while he was using a 50Mbps wireless internet service.

It offers 1 Gbps speed with its own internet

This is where Jared Mauch comes in. Participating in the tenders for infrastructure works, Mauch emerged victorious from this process and became the winner of the tender. Thus, it gained the right to offer its own internet to those who do not have internet access or who are underserved. Mauch, who has established the ISS network thanks to the funding from the state, needs to expand the already installed 22-kilometer fibet network to approximately 84 kilometers to complete the project.

Due to the fact that it is located in a rural area, approximately 800 meters of fiber line is needed to bring Mauch’s service to a single home. It costs $30,000 to reach each home, while the setup fee is $199.

Customers who want to use the service offered by Mauch need to pay 55 Dollars for 100 Mbps symmetric fiber internet and 79 Dollars per month for 1 Gbps symmetric fiber internet. While the project is aimed to be completed by the end of 2023, the number of customers is expected to reach 600.
