Sega’s mascot game character Sonic appeared once again before the end of 2021. But the cute blue hedgehog didn’t come quite as expected this time. We may be approaching the 22nd year of the 21st century, but Sonic has now joined us with the new Sonic game for the Commodore 64. Yes, you heard right; For Commodore 64. . .
This extraordinary development has become a reality thanks to the brave work of a team of coders. It is truly incredible to see a new Sonic game on the 8-bit console that was released in 1982.
A developer known as Mr SID took the Game Gear / Master System version of Sonic the Hedgehog and made it fully operational on legacy Commodore 64 hardware. It’s an incredible achievement, and as you can see in the video below, it’s also pretty awesome to watch.
In fact, the Commodore 64 uses a MOS 6510 CPU that has little in common with the Zilog Z80 CPUs of Sega consoles. But the result is excellent, especially the music, which has a whole new appeal when processed with the Commodore 64’s hidden sound chip.
If you’re among the lucky few who still own the Commodore 64, you can even play the game on original cassette-based hardware. But you will need a few extras for it to work. You need a RAM Expansion Unit with at least 256 KB of memory, which increases the console’s 64KB standard. You may also have a better experience if your Commodore 64 has one of the faster SuperCPU Accelerator modules.
Finally, let’s say the game runs great even on a standard Commodore 64 emulator. .
