In an interview in South Korea, Lee Jong-ho said that domestic smartphone brands are expected to launch a service that enables data communication between 5G phones and satellites in 2024. Since LG has shut down its smartphone division, Samsung is the only major smartphone brand in South Korea. Therefore, it is highly likely that Samsung will use the satellite connection in the phones it will release next year.
Galaxy S24 may come with two-way satellite link
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor that powers Samsung’s high-end phones supports connecting to Low Earth Orbit satellites for emergency calling and messaging. However, the Galaxy S23, Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 lack satellite connectivity. According to Samsung, the reason for this is; ecosystem is not fully developed.
Samsung is said to be working with global satellite communications company Iridium Communications to bring this feature.
Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus and Galaxy S24 Ultra, which are expected to be introduced in the first quarter of 2024, are expected to come with two separate processors, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Exynos 2400. Since the company has developed two-way satellite connectivity for Exynos processors, both models should have this feature.
The bidirectional satellite link for emergency communications allows the phone to connect to low earth orbit satellites to make calls and send messages when there is no cell phone network nearby. The person lost in an area where there is no cellular connection can be found easily and the necessary intervention is made faster. By the way, in April, a satellite search was carried out with the Galaxy S22 Ultra without using any special hardware.
