All these methods make up the penal system used in Ancient China. Although some are known as “Chinese torture”, there are also types of torture that they did not produce but continue to use.
These tortures can also be called the sanctions of a few states that have ruled in order to punish some crimes in Chinese history. Let’s take a closer look at the torture methods, some of which you must have heard from somewhere.
There was both physical and psychological violence in the method of dripping water.
The criminal is tied tightly, and water and acid are dripped onto his forehead. Even if just dripping water is considered a form of torture, the real torture here is acid. The prisoner does not know whether the next substance to be dripped is water or acid, and he suffers both psychological and physical torture.
In the method of dismembering by horses, the body was suddenly cut into pieces.
The prisoner’s feet, hands and head are tied to 4 different horses. The horses are suddenly rushed in different directions, and as a result, the person’s body is cut into pieces and dies.
The head and body of the victim were cut off by the executioner.
The prisoner is placed in a mechanism made of mulberry wood and his body is split in two by the executioner. In another similar form of torture, the prisoner’s head is put on a mulberry tree assembly and the executioner cuts off his neck.
Another terrible torture method is skinning.
In skinning, which is one of the most familiar methods, the skin is separated from the body with a knife. It is much more painful for overweight people because the layer of fat makes it difficult for the skin to separate from the body.
It appeared for the king and his concubine’s amusement: execution in a hot iron.
Legend has it that King Zhou’s favorite concubine, Daji, was a woman who never smiled. Zhou thought of doing something about it, and when the ants trying to climb the hot copper bowl were funny, he wanted to do the same for humans.
Daji, who had walked the criminals barefoot on the hot grills, and saw the inmates who fell and burned to death, burst into laughter. Thus, the method of execution in a hot iron has become permanent.
They were separating the nails from the fingers.
According to this method, which is usually applied to women, the nails of the prisoners are painfully removed with a needle and pulled out.
The captives were buried alive.
This punishment, which was generally used by prisoners of war, was used by administrators who wanted to save time. As if the evil of torture was not enough; the prisoners had their own pits dug.
Various objects were inserted through the nose.
In this method, a tube or various objects are inserted through the victim’s nose into the stomach without lubricant. This insertion is performed by guards, not medical personnel. Injuries, of course, are not a problem.
He was forced to eat repulsive substances such as feces.
Victim; Saturated salt solutions, vinegar, alcohol, paprika, urine or feces are forced to swallow and of course cause severe nausea. Sometimes victims are forced to drink extremely hot or boiling water.
Another method involving psychological and physical violence is sleep deprivation.
Victims are kept without sleep for days. This is achieved by tying them in painful positions, but also by constant light, noise and beatings, kicks and other punishments, especially if the victim is lying down.
Also, sleep deprivation is defined as torture by human rights standards and the UN. While it may sound harmless, it is an extremely brutal form of torture as it shatters the nervous system and causes other serious physical and psychological damage.
Women and gay men were raped.
Women imprisoned for political reasons are confined to the same cells as male criminals and raped. Sometimes women are stripped and the guards raped before they are locked up in cells. In addition, male political prisoners and gay offenders also become victims of rape.
Those imprisoned in the cold water dungeon could not sleep or sit.
The victim is locked in an iron cage and lowered into the water up to his neck, naked. The prisoner is cold and cannot sit or sleep. If he loses consciousness, he suffocates. According to reports, some of these cages have nails inside so that people cannot lean on them.
