The island nation of Barbados, located in the Caribbean, has taken a historic step towards legitimizing the metaverse. Barbados has announced that it will establish the first embassy in the metaverse. Barbados Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade signed an agreement with Decentraland for the construction of the digital embassy.

According to the news of CoinDesk, the government made a press release. With the projects about the Metaverse embassy, the development of facilities will be provided to determine and purchase the land, to create the architecture of virtual embassies and consulates, to provide services such as e-visas. A teleporter will also be developed that will allow users to move their avatars between various environments.

Gabriel Abed, Barbados Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, spoke to CoinDesk. He stated that they aim to go beyond this project of building structures in various virtual worlds and purchasing digital land. Abed leads the country’s metaverse diplomatic efforts.

The Caribbean country will start the operations of the temporary embassy in January. Thus, Barbados will be the first country in the world to recognize digital sovereign territory.
