The winner of the Astronomy Photographer of the Year award will be announced on September 15.
It is impossible not to admire the photographs that made it to the finals of the Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition run by The Royal Observatory Greenwich in England. These images, selected from a total of more than 3,000 photos from 67 different countries, are truly breathtaking.
These images taken by amateur and professional photographers prove once again how incredible the universe is. Finalists include the lights of the Milky Way reflecting off the world’s highest national highway in Tibet, the most detailed amateur-produced view of the Moon’s south pole, a partial solar eclipse over Italy, and the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy in Australia 270 years after its discovery. .
One of the biggest space discoveries of 2021 was Leonard’s comet. Discovered by GJ Leonard on January 3, 2021, this comet is also one of the focal points of this year’s competition. The organizer of the competition announced that almost a quarter of all entries in the Planets, Comets and Asteroids category were focused on Leonard’s comet.
Among the 36 finalists, the winners will be announced on September 15. The winning photographs in different categories will then be exhibited at the UK’s National Maritime Museum. These photographs will then be exhibited in an official book.
