Elon Musk has been keeping our agenda busy for the last few weeks, as he always does. The adventure, which started with the purchase of shares between Twitter and Musk in the past weeks, ended with Musk’s purchase of Twitter for a huge payment; The offer was accepted by Twitter.
However, although the agreement between Musk and Twitter has been formalized, the acquisition has not been completed yet and the process is expected to continue until the last quarter of 2022. As a matter of fact, Musk does not have full authority on Twitter yet, but he has been sending many signals about what he can do once he ‘gets the authority’ for a while. The most curious of these items was the Twitter ban of former US President Donald Trump.
Elon Musk’s first ‘clear’ statement about Trump
Elon Musk, in all his statements about Twitter, said that he wanted the platform to become the ‘centre of freedom of expression’ and he says he will bring freedom of expression to the platform for everyone. This situation naturally brings the issue of Trump, which was deleted from social media after the events after the last elections, to the agenda.
Trump received a ban by closing his Twitter accounts and was completely blocked from returning to the platform. In fact, Trump’s platform called Truth Social, which later established his own social media platform, attracted a lot of attention; Musk also shared a post about it. Responding to a question directly about this issue in a YouTube live broadcast he attended, Musk said, “I don’t have Twitter yet, so this is definitely not going to happen,” and replied, “I think I will reverse the ban imposed on Trump.”
Musk, who clearly said that the ban imposed on Trump alienated a large part of the society from the platform and did not prevent Trump from making his voice heard, Musk said that when he took the ropes, Trump and similarly banned names on the platform were one of them. He gave the message that he would come back. However, Trump has spoken about this before and said that he will not return to ‘Twitter, which is a boring platform’.
Musk also spoke about the new law of the European Union
The European Union has recently been taking steps to rewrite the rules of the game for technology giants. While monopoly lawsuits against giants such as Apple continue, laws are being worked on to protect consumers regarding the transparency of social media platforms such as social media platforms.
In the past days, the articles of this new law of the European Union have been announced; It was said that the law, which made many requests from technology giants to explain their mysterious algorithms, will be implemented next year.
A new video shared by Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Internal Market, showed that Twitter is “quite determined” to work in line with this new law to come. In the video, Musk and Breton went before the camera together and emphasized that they agreed on the legal regulations of the EU regarding platforms; Musk stated that Twitter and the EU’s future plans are “fully compatible”.
