Meta announced that WhatsApp users now have the ability to default to disappearing messages in all new chats. In addition, users can now set messages to disappear after 24 hours or 90 days (previously the 7 day option was available). Meta hopes to make WhatsApp conversations more reliable by allowing you to more easily choose “temp” messaging, keeping a permanent record of everything said.
If you decide to turn on the disappearing messaging feature by default, the people you chat with are notified that the messages will disappear after a while. If you are chatting with someone and need to save some important information such as an appointment, you still have the option to disable messages that disappear in certain chats.

Meta said in a statement on the subject: “For more than a year living apart from family and friends has made it clearer than ever that just because we are physically unable to talk face-to-face does not mean we have to sacrifice the privacy of our personal conversations. We believe messages are two key features that define what it means to be a private messaging service today and bring us one step closer to the feeling of in-person conversation.”
If you like the idea of disappearing messages, you can go to WhatsApp Settings on your iPhone or Android device, tap Account > Privacy > Default message scheduler and select it for a while.
