During SMS and MMS sending of phones, the size of the file transferred to the other party is very limited. That’s why many people prefer to do these types of transactions through applications such as WhatsApp and Telegram. Google also announced that it is trying to develop an alternative way to this situation. According to the plan, the company will allow us to perform this process directly from Google Photos without using any intermediary applications.

Could Google Photos be an alternative to messaging apps?

According to the information revealed in the new 10.4 beta version of the Google Messages application, the company continues to work on this new feature. In addition, users will now be able to do all their operations through a new tab called Google Photos brought to Settings. In the preliminary information shared, there is a statement as follows:

“You can share higher quality video in your messages2. (SMS and MMS)”

With the preliminary information, it is seen that users can transfer videos directly via Google Photos instead of using the messaging applications on their phones. This feature will likely allow the video to be uploaded to Google Photos and shared via a link sent to the other party, rather than an SMS vs MMS network.

As the adoption of RCS (Rich Communication Services) increases in the future, when you send photos and videos via the chat panel, they will be automatically uploaded to the cloud system. In this way, the other party will be able to access these files in high quality from any device at any time.

This new feature will actually not work as expected in a messaging app logic. For example, you go to Photos and select a video or photo. Then you say send as a message. Then an SMS or MMS is sent to the other party.

When you click on the image inside, it is displayed as if it came with a normal message. However, you are actually uploading this file to the cloud system. You send the link to the other party via SMS. For this reason, internet may be required to load the image in the incoming message the first time we click it. But since it will be loaded on the device later, it will remain there as a message.

Google is expected to bring this new feature to its Pixel series phones first. Then all Android devices will be able to benefit. However, it can be used directly through Google Photos, not through their own gallery or photo applications that phone manufacturers place on the devices.
