Although countries are turning to renewable energy, fossil fuels still play a major role in electricity generation. Wind engineering company Siemens Gamesa announced that they broke the record for the power produced in one day with the SG 14-222 DD model wind turbine.
Founded in partnership with Spanish Gamesa and German Siemens, the company develops products for renewable energy. One of the world’s largest wind turbines, SG 14-222 DD, broke the record by producing 359 MWh of energy in 24 hours.
Power record broken with SG 14-222 DD model wind turbine
The SG 14-222 DD was able to generate energy close to the Haliade-X turbines produced by GE. Manufactured by China, MingYang is still considered the world’s largest wind turbine with a capacity of 16 MW.
The SG 14-222 DD, which can be increased to 15 MW with Power Boost technology, has a nominal value of 14 MW. The produced turbine has a rotor with a diameter of 222 meters and recyclable B108 blades with a length of 108 meters. According to the announced data, the SG 14-222 DD provides the energy required for an average electric vehicle to travel 1.8 million km.
Activated in November 2021, the turbine started generating electricity a month later. First tested in Denmark, the SG 14-222 DD will be able to power approximately 18,000 households per year.
Siemens Gamesa announced that they have received an order from RWE for the 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind power project. Located on Dogger Bank in the North Sea, 195km off England’s northeast coast, the project will be the first to install the company’s flagship 14 MW Direct Drive offshore wind turbine.
Commenting on the subject, officials said, “With each new generation of our offshore direct drive turbine technology, which we produce using fewer moving parts, we improve components. Mass production of our new generation products with higher performance will start in 2024.” said.
