Spring, summer, autumn, winter… It seems that the season in which you were born may really influence our mood to be sad, melancholic, volatile or active.
Many studies conducted in the past years show that the season of birth has a long-lasting effect on the presence of certain chemicals in our bodies, such as serotonin and dopamine. This shows that the season in which we are born affects our mood and character. Different studies show that many diseases are involved in the issue.
Let’s take a look at the details of the research first;
It has one of the leading medical faculties in Europe; Asst.Prof. In a study conducted by Xenia Gonda and her team, Gonda presented a questionnaire consisting of some questions to more than 400 participants.
The questions in the questionnaire were aimed at understanding the general psychological and mental state. In the survey, which consisted of questions such as “My mood often changes for no reason”, “I complain more than anything”, the participants gave answers to “how well it suits them” as you can imagine.
The answers obtained and the dates of birth were compared and analyzed. Relationships between specific responses and mood disorders and dates of birth were compiled and the results were pooled.
According to this research, the season of birth and some mood characteristics are explained as follows;
- The ‘cyclothymic temperament’, characterized by rapid, frequent fluctuations between sad and joyful moods, is significantly higher in those born in summer than in those born in winter.
- Hyperthymic temperament, which tends to be overly positive, is much higher in those born in spring and summer.
- Those born in winter are much less prone to irritability than those born at other times of the year.
- Those born in autumn tend to have a significantly lower depressive temperament than those born in other months.
Many studies over the years have confirmed a link between the season of birth and our personality and even our illnesses.
A study conducted in 1992 revealed that there were significant relationships between the season of birth and personality traits such as extroversion, neuroticism, impulsiveness, adventurism, empathy, and locus of control.
Another study revealed that ‘people born in summer’ feel much more ‘lucky’ in all aspects of life than people born in winter. In the same study, it was also shown that people born in summer have less neurotic personality traits than those born in winter, and people born in summer are extroverted and people born in winter are introverted.
Moreover, many studies have also revealed that there is a link between the month of birth and the development of diseases. For example, in one study, the incidence of epilepsy was much higher in those born in the winter months compared to other times of the year, while MS disease, ALS and Parkinson’s diseases were found to be more common in those born in summer.
There is more research on the subject than I can add here, and each one basically says the same thing; The season in which we are born affects many things about our personality. But when you say it like that, don’t think about the effects of the signs and planets. The reason has nothing to do with them.
So how does the season in which we are born affect our personality?
Numerous studies have focused on the period spent in the womb at this point. Exposure to vitamin D, periodically changing nutritional habits, infections that the mother is exposed to, dopamine sensitivity that develops due to external factors (season, weather, etc.) in the last months of pregnancy; The effects of the womb process on the secretion of chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin are pointed out.
In addition, environmental factors such as air pollution are thought to be effective. However, despite the large number of studies carried out, a single reason cannot be given specifically for each condition.
These studies are important because many critical topics, from heart diseases to diseases such as Parkinson’s, as well as psychological disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, and suicidality, seem to be affected by this situation. It is thought that with more data obtained, critical developments related to human health may occur.
