Diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the world. This disease, which affects human life negatively, can even be fatal. As a result of the latest research on diabetes, very interesting results have emerged. Researchers from the University of Limerick in Ireland, who reviewed seven studies, discovered that even a two-minute walk after a meal lowers blood sugar and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes.
The team that conducted the research generally recommends taking a walk 1 to 1.5 hours after eating. Because blood sugar is at its highest during this time, the muscles absorb fuel from food more easily. In addition, the team explained that mini-walks between 2 and 5 minutes after a meal are also very beneficial.
Walks after meals regulate blood sugar levels
Researchers reviewed seven studies showing the effects of sitting versus walking on heart health, including insulin and blood sugar levels. As a result of these studies and investigations, it was revealed that light walking after a meal had a significant effect on regulating blood sugar levels.
None of the participants in five of the studies reviewed had prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Participants in the remaining two studies consisted of people with and without such diseases. Participants in the studies were asked to stand or walk for 2 to 5 minutes every 20 to 30 minutes for one day. As a result, it turned out that just a few minutes of walking after a meal significantly improved blood sugar levels compared to sitting. This is because light walking requires more active muscles than standing and uses sugar when there is a lot of sugar in the bloodstream.
The team that conducted the research recommends that people take two to three-minute mini-walks even during work hours, pointing out that even a little movement leads to very beneficial changes in the human body.
