A Peruvian family bought an animal they thought was a puppy from a small shop in the city of Lima 6 months ago.
According to the Independent’s report, the owner of the dog, Maribel Sotelo, says that the pet, which they call Run Run, initially played games with other pet dogs in the neighborhood, but as they got older, they realized that something was wrong. Because Run Run was hunting ducks and chickens in the neighbors’ coops.
In the process, it turned out that the animal was not actually a dog, but an Andean fox with its slender legs, bushy tail, pointed head and prominent ears. But Run Run reportedly ran away from home a few days ago. The story was learned after that. National Forest and Wildlife Authority (SERFOR) officials are calling to take him to a specialty center or zoo.
“We thought he was a purebred puppy,” Sotelo says.
Wildlife expert Walter Silva explains that smugglers smuggled many wild animals from Amazon regions such as Loreto, Ucayali and Madre de Dios and sold them in Lima. According to Silva, they kill the parents to steal the puppies, and the puppies are bought and sold illegally.
