Apple’s own MagSafe charging accessories line for iPhone offers a very limited product range. The entire lineup consists of the standard MagSafe drive, MagSafe Duo and the not-so-impressive MagSafe battery pack. But the new images show that Apple at one point considered offering a metal stand with an integrated MagSafe charger, but then gave up on it.

Photos and related details were shared by Twitter user @TheBlueMister and subsequently published by MacRumors. @TheBlueMister is among a group of collectors on Twitter sharing details about prototype and pre-release Apple devices and accessories. @TheBlueMister says he managed to use the device identified as “Apple Magic Charger”.

The product stands out with a thick aluminum base with a circular cutout for the MagSafe disk, which can stand either flat or vertically, similar to the Apple Watch charger in MagSafe Duo.

The Magic Charger has a rubber layer underneath to prevent it from moving, and a permanently attached USB-C cable is also visible. This mount doesn’t look very good for general endurance and travel, but the MagSafe Duo’s purpose seems to be aimed at travel.

A bigger, more obvious problem is that the Magic Charger can only hold an iPhone in landscape orientation. The round magnetic MagSafe disk stands too low to accommodate the vertical position.

It is not known why Apple did not release this device. But the obvious problems we mentioned above seem to be the main reason for this situation.
