The popular game store Steam, rival of Epic Games, makes discounts on games at regular intervals, making gamers with a low budget happy. Valve, which entered the handheld console market quickly with its Steam Deck device, usually runs campaigns on the platform under the name of winter or spring discounts. It also offers discounts on various special days.

There is a problem on the Steam platform that users complain about a lot. Some developers and publishers offer small 1-2 percent discounts to further stand out on Steam. While this prevented other games and discounts from coming to the fore, Valve was criticized for condoning cheating in the store.

Steam changes its discount rules

Valve has made significant changes to its Steam discounts policy. Due to the new regulation that will come into effect from March 28, the game discount on the platform will now have to start from 10 percent. In addition, the waiting period between discounts on Steam will change from 6 weeks to 28 days.

So developers and publishers will wait at least 28 days to apply a discount again after a sale ends on a game. The discount waiting period will apply to all promotions and discounts on Steam. Lunar New Year Sale, Summer Sale, Autumn Sale and Winter Sale periods are exempt from this rule.

New Steam discount rules effective from March 28:

  • You can discount your product at checkout, but you can’t discount it again for 28 days after the checkout sale ends.
  • You cannot offer a discount on your product for 28 days after a price increase in any currency.
  • You cannot put your product on sale for 28 days after a sale ends, except for seasonal events across Steam.
  • You cannot discount your product at seasonal discount events for 28 days after your product is released, or for 28 days after your exit discount ends, or for 28 days after a price increase in any currency.
  • You cannot change your price during an ongoing promotion, or a promotion scheduled for the future.
  • You cannot put your product at a discount greater than 90% or less than 10%.
  • Special discounts cannot be longer than two weeks or shorter than 1 day.

Valve said in a statement on its FAQ page that the new discount waiting period will also apply to featured discounts. The company states, “The discount wait period applies to Deal of the Day, Midweek Madness, Weekend Deals, Weeklong Deals, publisher weekends, and all other special deals.” used the phrases.
