German automotive giant Mercedes-Benz is accelerating the transition in all-electric car production. Arousing curiosity with its concept models and EQS series, it may be earlier than expected that Mercedes will only produce electric cars.
Mercedes will renew its factories to produce electric-only vehicles in the second half of the next decade. However, the company aims to stretch its production lines according to market demand, rather than build plants for electric vehicles only.
Mercedes’ electric car plans surprised
In line with the statements made by Mercedes-Benz Production Chief Joerg Burzer, Mercedes’ roadmap on the electric car has become clear. Burzer said that the process of transitioning some production lines in the factories to fully electric will be earlier than planned.
“Building a completely new battery electric vehicle factory takes time. We took another approach. In the next few years we will definitely have some lines that only produce electric vehicles. We will also see all factories switch to electricity in the second half of this decade.”
Germany-based automaker, announced last September at the IAA Mobility fair, for the first time in the production of the EQE model in Germany. plans to start in factories. This production will be followed by facilities in Beijing and Tuscaloosa.
Shifting its investments from internal combustion vehicles to only electric production platforms, Mercedes relies on the EQE model to increase its sales of electric vehicles. Burzer believes the E-class is a segment where they can deliver much higher volumes. According to
2021 data, only 2.3 percent of Mercedes-Benz’s sales were electric vehicles. When plug-in hybrids with both an internal combustion engine and a battery were included, this figure rose to 11 percent. But by 2025, electric and hybrid cars are expected to account for 50% of sales.
