When we bought an up-to-date computer for the last few years, it has an SSD instead of an HDD. SSDs, which have become a standard apart from entry-level products, also have standards among themselves. We haven’t even seen the lowest-performing SATA SSDs in mid-range and high-end computers for a long time. The speed of PCIe SSDs, which directly contact the PCI input on the motherboard for high speeds, will increase.
With the announcement of SSD manufacturer Silicon Motion, the date has been given for the PCIe 5.0 standard, which has been heard for a while. In addition, the estimated speeds shared are at astonishing levels.
14,000Mb/s speed will be reached with PCIe 5.0
When we look at the SSD market, we do not see many SSDs that can exceed 7,000Mb/s read and write speeds. This is because the PCIe 4.0 connection method is not conducive to greater speed. Storage manufacturers have been pondering this for a while. We have seen that Samsung has given a signal about SSDs that will reach these speeds before. According to the discourse of Silicon Motion, SSDs using this new standard in 2024 will take their place on the shelves.
Although 7,000Mb/s SSDs are sufficient for many purposes, even small differences can have big results in sectors where high-size file transfers are made, such as cinema. It’s exciting that the new standard will potentially double the speed of SSDs.
However, the release of PCIe 5.0 will not change the fact that PCIe 4.0 will be used in new systems. Because with the PCIe 4.0 interface, disks that offer higher data security are produced. So we may not see PCIe 5.0 become the standard for a few years.
