Disney+ and Hulu recently made a move that surprised their subscribers, removing more than 50 TV shows and movies from their platforms. These included high-budget projects like Willow’s sequel, the action-thriller The Princess starring Rosaline and Joey King, and Bryan Cranston’s The One and Only Ivan.

Disney announced last May that it had lost four million subscribers. Announcing that it will take a series of steps to make up for this loss, Disney has included increasing the price of its ad-free Disney+ membership, developing a single app experience that combines content from Disney+ and Hulu, and removing various content from both platforms.

Disney’s strategy has cost the company dearly

About a month after the liquidation was first announced, a new SEC (United States Securities and Exchange Commission) filing revealed that Disney made $1.5 billion in losses from the removal of Disney+ and Hulu content.

Additionally, the company’s CFO, Christine McCarthy, stated that a loss of up to $1.8 billion could be written off to reduce the studio’s tax bill. It seems likely that both Disney+ and Hulu will remove more content in the coming weeks, given that the studio is already planning to lose $1.5 billion from this venture.

Many of the movies and series that have been canceled so far were either canceled series or one-off movies that users are unlikely to watch again. But given that it was removed despite the plan to follow for Willow, we might think that even big-name content could be removed.
