A geothermal energy company plans to pierce the Earth’s crust and reach the energy sources there to produce clean energy. Quaise Energy says their technology allows it to go 20 kilometers below the surface. At this depth, there is unlimited heat, according to the firm. The firm has so far collected $40 million in funding from “angel” investors for its project. Arunas Chesonis, Managing Partner of Safar Partners, who led the funding round
, said in a statement, “The rapid transition to clean energy is one of the biggest challenges facing humanity,” said. “We have to approach the clean energy transition from both these angles. Quaise’s solution promises a future where clean, renewable energy will secure the future of our planet.”
Conventional drills can easily pass between rocks and minerals found at shallow depths in the crust, but the hardness of the rocks at deeper depths, the extreme pressure and high temperature render the drill bits useless. We will soon see if the millimetic drilling system
Quaise, developed by the company, can realize this idea. The company aims to produce functional drilling rigs by 2024.
