While dozens of citizens lose their lives every day in our country due to traffic accidents, unfortunately the accidents do not come one after the other. The latest data shared by the Traffic Department of the General Directorate of Security showed that a total of 88 thousand fatal and injured traffic accidents occurred in the first 6 months of the year.

According to the data, 72,989 of the accidents occurred in settlements and 15 thousand 11 of them took place outside the settlement. In the accidents, 920 people lost their lives at the scene, and a total of 127 thousand 619 people were injured. 39,798 of the accidents occurred with one vehicle, 43 thousand 286 with two vehicles and 4 thousand 916 with multiple vehicles. The reasons for the accidents were shared as follows:

The biggest cause of accidents is driver error:

A total of 88,223 driver faults in fatal and injury accidents were recorded in the minutes. In addition, 10 thousand 316 pedestrians, 2 thousand 260 vehicles, 1524 passengers and 414 road defects were detected. The driver faults that caused the most accidents were as follows:

  • Not adjusting the speed of their vehicles according to the conditions required by the road, weather and traffic: 34 thousand 14
  • Non-compliance with the transition priority in places where intersections, passages and pavements are narrow: 13 thousand 337
  • Failure to comply with lane monitoring and changing rules: 8 thousand 908
  • Rear impact: 7,445
  • Non-compliance with the turn rules: 6 thousand 774

  1. Istanbul – 11 thousand 117 accidents, 20 thousand 730 injured, 58 dead
  2. Ankara – 6 thousand 335 accidents, 8 thousand 703 injured, 39 dead
  3. İzmir – 5 thousand 772 accidents, 7 thousand 302 injured, 34 dead

In the first 6 months of 2022, 10 thousand 267 thousand 990 traffic fine reports were prepared. 606 thousand 330 vehicles were banned from traffic.

When we look at the table above, the biggest thing that will reduce traffic accidents is to take our own precautions individually.
