Samsung is about to enter another legal battle over patent infringement. Patent licensing company K.Mirza LLC has recently sued Samsung, alleging that the Korean tech giant is using a smartphone battery technology originally developed by Dutch research institute “Nederlandse Organisatie Voor Togepast Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoe” without permission.

The technology in question is an algorithm that can determine how much battery life is left in a mobile device such as Galaxy smartphones. The prediction is based on algorithms that analyze user behavior and makes it possible to instantly view the remaining battery life of a mobile device.

Patent infringement lawsuit concerned older versions of the Android operating system. The patent infringement charges are said to be linked to models using older versions of the Android operating system, although it’s not clear exactly which ones. So modern devices such as the Galaxy S22 series seem not to be affected by this case.

Although the lawsuit targets Samsung, it revolves around technologies in the Android operating system rather than Samsung’s proprietary software. In this case, other Android OEMs, including Google and Xiaomi, that use the same technology may face a similar lawsuit.
