Beeper, an application that allows to unify all messaging applications, now supports RCS and Google Messages. This means that now an RCS service other than iMessage can be used on Apple devices.
Google has been fighting with Apple for a long time over Google Messages integration
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the augmented version of SMS that Google forced Apple to adopt. It enables end-to-end encryption between devices, read receipts, typing indicators and more.
While Android users have largely embraced RCS along with Google Messages, Apple has yet to join the caravan. iMessage on iPhones offers the same features as RCS, but lacks cross-platform compatibility with Android phones. Beeper’s new update will change that.
It’s been a long-running battle Google has waged with Apple, but it still hasn’t completely won. Because bringing the RCS feature to iPhones eventually required a third-party app.
So how does this feature work? For starters, you will need to download and use the Beeper app to get RCS supported Google Messages on your iPhones after the feature is out of beta.
Beeper notes that RCS messaging works great for sending and receiving emoji reactions. The new feature even sends and shows back taps from iPhone users.
However, there are some known issues that Beeper is trying to fix. Display image avatars are not yet visible, message history is not fully synced yet, read receipts are not supported for groups, and spelling indicators are not yet active. It is hoped that Beeper will fix these issues once the feature is out of beta.
