The concept of consciousness, which continues to be one of the greatest mysteries of humanity, has been instrumental in the emergence of a claim that has been going on for 25 years in the scientific world. A neuroscientist and a philosopher made a bet in 1998 that the source of consciousness would be found by 2023.
However, the year has been 2023. In the 25 years we have left behind, the source of consciousness has still not been discovered. But the new research on this topic has now determined the winner. The winner from the neuroscientist Christof Koch and the philosopher David Chalmers was the philosopher Chalmers.
How did consciousness turn into a claim?
In fact, the claim of the duo did not start on a scientific discussion. Sitting in a bar in Bremen, Germany, the duo must have had a little too much to drink, so they extended their conversation until they were conscious.
David Chalmers, who also gave lectures at a conference on consciousness in the morning, carried the subject to the bar. After a few drinks, Koch drew the swords. He said that in 25 years, a clue to consciousness will be discovered in the brain. Chalmers said it was not possible, the argument started.
The two names met at the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness meeting held in New York on June 23 and announced the winner.
Research that concludes the claim:
With the end of 25 years, the duo had to end this claim. For this reason, the results of the new study based on two major hypotheses were shared at the Association meeting. At the same time, these results also ended the claim.
The research, signed by the duo along with several scientists, addressed the hypotheses of “integrated information theory” and “global workplace theory”. Studies and tests in the brain did not agree with either hypothesis. The research, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, suggested that hypotheses need to be rearranged.
