Emergency calls saw an unprecedented rise at a music festival in the US. Although the teams thought that there was a big accident at first, the truth came out later. The iPhone crash detection feature called 911 thinking that people dancing had an accident.

iPhone crash detection calls police for dancing users

Apple’s emergency feature called Crash Detection left its mark on the Bonnaroo Music Festival held between 14-18 June. Police teams checking the area where the festival was held reported that they received about five times more false calls than in previous years.

For those who don’t know, the accident detection feature is available on various iPhone and Apple Watch models. The crash detection feature sends a notification to the user. If they do not reach the iPhone or Apple Watch within 20 seconds, they automatically call the emergency services.

It is unknown why accident detection sends false alerts. However, users dancing to the Bonnaroo Music Festival are believed to have unwittingly activated it.

Police teams warned citizens about the issue and advised iPhone users to turn off accident detection while “dancing”. After this warning, it was reported that false calls were reduced by half. While Apple said it was investigating the issue, it disabled erroneous calls at the festival with the help of remote diagnostics. The company located the callers to confirm that the calls were indeed false alarms.

A similar situation has happened before with Google’s Emergency SOS feature. Google brought a series of updates to the Emergency SOS feature with Android 13. However, this update did not perform as expected, causing turmoil in the UK. Emergency services were sent to people who did not need help, causing difficulties for the teams.
