Your data can be stolen because of your keyboard sound
Research indicates that people often hide their screen or keyboard when typing a password, but often do nothing to hide the sound of their keyboard. However, artificial intelligence can accurately detect almost anything you type on your computer, including sensitive emails or documents. According to the article, the AI achieved 95 percent accuracy when trained on keystrokes recorded by a nearby phone. When the recording was done by the Zoom call, the accuracy of the model was 93 percent.
However, of course, for artificial intelligence to work, it must first be trained. Not only is training sufficient, the attacker needs to at least cleanly record keystroke sounds on the target’s keyboard. In the related study, the AI was trained using a MacBook Pro and iPhone 13 mini. The researchers then pressed each key 25 times on the computer and recorded these sounds with a phone about 15 inches away.
But there is no need to be seriously worried as most people use a different keyboard or laptop. In most of these, the keyboard sound is almost completely different. Therefore, it is important to train the model in accordance with the target. To protect yourself, you can change your writing style or create background noise when typing sensitive information.
