Tesla vehicles ‘becoming aware’
Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded to the X/Twitter post where he gave a speech on stage about FSD software in Teslas. At that time, the capability of FSD, or fully autonomous driving software, was not sufficient for urban driving. But in a short time, Tesla managed to develop the FSD software, and Tesla vehicles are easily navigating around San Francisco with just “computer vision,” as Musk mentioned in the video.
On the other hand, Musk said in his response that Tesla may have solved some aspects of artificial general intelligence: “I think we may have solved some aspects of AGI. The car has a mind. Not a great mind, but a mind nonetheless.”
Elon Musk’s effort to develop artificial general intelligence through Tesla is also tied to his newest venture, X.AI, which focuses on unlocking the mysteries of the universe, such as extraterrestrial life, with the power of AI-powered systems. In addition, it is developing the Dojo supercomputer under the umbrella of Tesla. The company aims to reach 100 exa-flops capacity with 300 thousand Nvidia A100 graphics cards by October 2024. That’s nearly 100 times the processing capacity of Frontier, the most powerful supercomputer available.
If what Musk said about Tesla uncovering some aspects of artificial general intelligence is true, we could see fully autonomous vehicles becoming semi-conscious in the future. However, when we look at the current situation, it would not be wrong to say that a full AGI is at least a few years away.
