The biggest problem of electric vehicles can be charging. Customers often have trouble finding suitable places to charge their vehicles. Many users charge their vehicles in their own garages with the charging cables provided by the brands.
While charging is a big problem for electric cars, most manufacturers are looking for ways to solve this problem. That being the case, a very interesting move came from Tesla. The American manufacturer seems to emulate the Apple brand when it comes to charging cables.
Tesla now charges extra for chargers!
Tesla has changed its longstanding policy of delivering every vehicle with a mobile charging cable. The electric car maker will now charge its customers $400 for a level 2 charger and $275 for a level 1.
Tesla initially delivered its cars with chargers that included both a NEMA 14-50 (level 2) and a normal output (Level 1) port. The automaker then unpacked the NEMA 14-50 connector and began shipping its vehicles with a level 1 connector only, the NEMA 5-15 adapter. Customers who wanted to buy a Level 2 charging system were subject to an extra fee.
Tesla has now gone one step further and decided not to provide charging cables in its new vehicles. This move of the company reminded us of Apple’s policy of not offering phones bundled chargers. Most smartphone owners have a charger at home that they can actually use. Therefore, although this situation is criticized, we can say that it prevents waste at a certain point.
However, it is really surprising that such a step has been taken in such a new field as electric cars. In addition, the fact that the chargers are stated as “out of stock” on Tesla’s website has increased the concerns even more.
So what do you think about this decision of Tesla? You can share your views with us in the comments section or on the SDN Forum.
