Chinese internet giant Tencent introduced the GFP-GAN artificial intelligence system developed to repair old worn photos and increase their resolution. The technology in question can fill in the missing parts of the photos with high accuracy in seconds.

Tencent developers used NVIDIA’s existing StyleGAN-2 model when creating the GFP-GAN system. This technique aims to preserve the “identity” of the person in the photograph by focusing on basic facial features such as eyes and mouth. So the aim here is to get the closest result to the reality.
You can try it for free
The neural network system produced by Chinese experts has its limitations. For example, it cannot yet work with high resolution images. It should also be noted that it is far from perfect for now. There may be a slight change in identity of the people in the photos.
Despite all these shortcomings, we can say that GFP-GAN is promising. The architects of the project decided to make the artificial intelligence system available to everyone. You can try the algorithm on the website or download the source code from GitHub to integrate the restoration technology into your own project.
