Popular messaging app Telegram has been blocked due to personal data breaches and national security concerns. The Iraqi Ministry of Communications, which took the decision to block, announced that the application will be permanently closed to access.
Telegram is permanently blocked in Iraq!
Telegram, which is widely used in Iraq as well as around the world, has made it necessary to take various measures because it hosts some malicious activities. The ministry, which determined that serious information such as identity information, open addresses and -even- family connections of citizens were shared in some channels within the application, closed the application completely, citing that the application abused this sensitive data. Telegram, which preferred not to consider the requests submitted in the process before the decision was taken, made this decision mandatory.
“Personal data breach” was not the only problem faced in the process leading up to the ban decision. The Iraqi Ministry of Communications also determined that the Telegram application is used by various malicious groups, especially by various terrorist organizations. The Ministry stated that the application is frequently used to announce the attacks to be organized and stated that the issue is a national security threat.
The Iraqi Ministry of Communications stated that I respect the freedom of communication as long as it does not threaten the personal data of its citizens and the security of the country. On the Telegram side, no statement has been made on the subject yet.
