The team behind cryptocurrency wallet service Atomic Wallet has confirmed that they have received reports of hacking of user wallets in the last hours.

More than 1000 cryptocurrencies are in danger

Atomic Wallet users have been reporting that their funds have been hacked for the past few hours. The Atomic Wallet team stated that it is making an effort to investigate and analyze the situation and will share more information. So far, there has been no clear statement from the Atomic Wallet team, apart from security company SlowMist.

According to SlowMist experts, the attack was caused by Atomic Wallet’s recent official website update. The attackers are believed to have accessed users’ private keys and passwords by modifying the source code of the software on the server. In this way, the attackers managed to transfer the funds to their own addresses.

Atomic Wallet is a wallet that supports 1000+ cryptocurrencies. Users can store cryptocurrencies here without requiring registration or verification. It is also possible to make purchases and trades with Atomic Wallet. The project team states that users do not store their personal data or private keys on servers, and transactions take place in a decentralized manner.

Recent attack is not the first, Atomic Wallet has been exploited before

In February, the Least Authority released a comprehensive report that funds held in Atomic Wallet were at risk. Atomic’s CEO Konstantin Gladych had the following to say about the attack at the time:

  • None of these issues pose any security risk to our users, as Atomic is a non-storage wallet and all data is stored locally on users’ devices. We hope to implement the remaining recommendations of Least in Q2 2022. When we’re done, we’ll recheck the app.
  • Atomic Wallet has passed two security audits so far. In the other audit carried out by DerSecur Ltd, “The average security score of the application is 4.7. This result is above the market average. The application can be considered secure enough, however, we recommend that you draw attention to the vulnerabilities discovered during the audit and consult the detailed results.”
  • Security is our highest priority and we are constantly working to improve Atomic Wallet. Therefore, we have thoroughly reviewed Least’s report and will fully implement its recommendations in Q2 2022.

After Konstantin Gladych’s statements in February, Atomic Wallet is again under fire. According to the latest announcement, the team said, “We have received reports that wallets have been compromised. We are doing our best to investigate and analyze the situation. “When we have more information on Twitter, we will share it accordingly.” Another prominent hacking news of the day, which we conveyed as Kriptokoin.com, is about the anti-Bitcoin Peter Schiff.
