Regarding the underground cargo transport network, which was approved by the country’s parliament late last year, Switzerland is preparing to start the Cargo Sous Terrain (CST) project. The project, first revealed in 2016, was worth $3.4 billion at the time. It is stated that the current valuation of the expanded project is 35 billion dollars.

Scheduled to be completed by 2045

Switzerland is focusing on developing an alternative route for the transport of cargo loads that can reduce this congestion, with 40% more traffic expected to occur over the next 30 years.

The CST project includes a tunnel with a diameter of about 6 m and a flat floor divided into three lanes. Vehicles with electric motors will travel at a speed of 30 km per hour in these tunnels. Food and refrigerated products can be transported using refrigeration compatible vehicles, and there will also be an overhead line in the tunnel to transport smaller loads within the tunnel.

Within the scope of the project, a line of approximately 70 km will be created between Zurich and Härkingen/Niederbipp, which is expected to be completed by 2031 for the first time, and includes only 10 connection centers. With the completion of the CST network, there will be approximately 500 km of tunnels across the country. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2045.
