Ken Kutaragi, one of the first names that comes to mind when it comes to Sony and PlayStation, officially resigned from his position at Sony shortly before the release of PlayStation 4. Kutaragi, who has been providing consultancy services without taking an active role in the game and technology market since then, made a statement about Metaverse, one of the most popular topics of recent times, and admitted that he found virtual reality quite meaningless at this stage.
Ken Kutaragi doesn’t like Metaverse
Ken Kutaragi, born in 1950, was the leader and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment for quite some time. Kutaragi, who is also described as the ‘Father of PlayStation’, took part in the production of many consoles, including the first PlayStation, PS2, PSP and PlayStation 3. Although not much known, Kutaragi was also the designer of the sound processor for Nintendo’s famous console, the SNES.
Although Kutaragi has not been actively involved in the technology world for a long time, he continues to provide consultancy services to various companies. Finally, in an interview with Bloomberg, Kutaragi said that it is important to stay in the real world and that he cannot perceive the purpose of something like Metaverse, which is built on making everything half-real.
Kutaragi claimed that he finds it strange that people prefer to be a fancy avatar over their real selves, and that it’s not much different from being on a website where anonymous messages are sent. Finally, talking about virtual reality sets like PSVR2 and Quest 2, Kutaragi explained that such hardware isolates people from the real world and does not accept this. PlayStation’s father explained that he finds VR glasses ‘boring’ in one word.
