The adventure is just beginning for the RISC-V architecture, which was awarded a great honor last week by winning a tender for NASA’s computer systems. It has come to the fore that Apple is also working on RISC-V coprocessors.

Apple and RISC-V

Apple is perhaps the company that uses the ARM architecture the best today. We can say that Apple M series processors have no rivals in terms of performance and efficiency. As usual, Apple does not want to rely on a single source.

ARM architecture is used by licensing as it is known. RISC-V is open source and anyone can contribute to this architecture. It is not as advanced as ARM to work in main processors, but it has proven itself in computer systems of a certain size.

Apple, on the other hand, intends to develop the auxiliary chips used in the Apple M series with RISC-V. More than 30 chips are used in the Apple M series for many functions such as wireless connections, image processing, touch, wired connections, artificial intelligence. It will also be beneficial for Apple to be based on RISC-V.

On the software side, it is stated that the transition to this architecture does not require a great deal of effort. In this regard, Apple will also gain speed. It is not yet known when Apple will switch to the RISC-V architecture, but work has probably begun.
