Although Samsung and Apple compete strongly in the technology world, this does not prevent partnerships between the two major manufacturers. The new collaboration, which has emerged in South Korea, specifically addresses the screens that Apple wants to use for its future devices.
According to new reports from Korea, Samsung is working on a new OLED display technology for Apple. Reports call this a “two-stack tandem” and state that the displays will be produced for iPad, iMac and MacBook.
Samsung will produce its new OLED screen for Apple
The new OLED panels will allow the maximum brightness to increase and the battery to last longer thanks to the double layer. It is stated that the innovative OLED displays to be designed for tablets, laptops and cars will consist of two substrates for overlapping light emission. This panel, which can be delivered to Apple between 2024 and 2025, may first appear on the iPad Pro.
The main advantages of this technology for the screen, named “Two-stack tandem”, are the brightness of the panel, which can be doubled and quadrupled, respectively, and longer screen time. However, according to the source, there are some issues Samsung faced when producing these “two-stack” (or two-layer) panels: production costs and color accuracy.
Although Apple is one of the most important customers of this panel series, which Samsung calls the “T” series as an abbreviation for Tandem, it should be noted that T1 screens will not be exclusive to Apple. In other words, the first T1 codenamed screen may even be released with a Samsung Electronics product.
The report also mentions the possible use of Samsung T1 displays in the automotive industry, but does not go into detail. Innovative panels could be an opportunity for Apple’s highly anticipated Apple Car product.
Mass production of the T1 display is expected to begin next year. However, Apple has always been very cautious about offering technological innovations to all its users, so it is thought that the second generation display called T2 will be placed on iPads.
