Iran has been on the world agenda with a major social event in recent days. In the capital Tehran, a woman named Mahsa Amini was arrested and beaten to death on the grounds that her dress was against Islam. As a result, a major uprising started in Iran.
Officials announced that there may be slowdowns and interruptions in internet connections for security reasons. In the past days, the internet has been completely cut off in Iran, and access to Instagram and WhatsApp has been blocked. On Twitter, a user asked, “Is it technically possible to provide Starlinks to the Iranian people?” In response to his question, Elon Musk announced that he would seek an exemption from Iran for Starlink.A new statement came from the owner of the company, which took steps in this regard.
“Starlink is activating…”
The U.S. Treasury Department has released guidance that expands internet services available to Iranians despite U.S. sanctions. When asked about Starlink after the guide was announced, an official said, “What the company provides is hardware that should be considered commercially and is not covered by the general license. That’s why they need to talk to the Treasury Department,” he said.
Referring to the decision taken, US State Department spokesman Antony Blinken, in his post on Twitter, announced that the US Treasury Department took action to “provide internet freedom and free information flow” to Iranians. While wondering about the step Starlink will take in this regard, Elon Musk replied to Blinken’s tweet, “Starlink is activating…”.
Starlink satellites provide high-speed internet service thanks to receivers similar to satellite dishes used for TVs. No matter where you are in the world, you can use high-speed internet thanks to these satellites. Starlink, which fixed the problems in communication and internet especially after the disaster areas and the war in Ukraine, will now work due to bans rather than internet interruptions in Iran.
