Various drugs have been used in agriculture for a very long time. From time to time, reservations may arise about the effects of these drugs on human health. One of the leading ones among these reservations is, of course, whether the substances used externally can cause cancer.
In the USA, the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that the situation is not bright at all in its study. It was announced that 80 percent of the urine samples of the participating children and adults were found to contain glyphosate, which was closely examined for suspected cancer causing. This was described as “troubling and worrying”.
Research results are alarming
In studies conducted for many years, it was known that the herbicide glyphosate was encountered in urine samples. The CDC also rolled up its sleeves to reveal how much glyphosate people were exposed to in this study in the United States.
The CDC collected urine samples from 2,310 people in this study. Traces of glyphosate were found in 1885 of the samples taken from the participants, one-third of whom were children aged 6-18. These results were considered troubling by many experts. Although this substance was defined as a cancer-causing substance by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2015, this decision was not supported at that time. The World Health Organization, in its statements on the subject, described the probability of glyphosate causing cancer as ‘low’.
Glyphosate is most commonly used as a weed killer. In 1974, the agricultural chemistry and biotechnology company Mosanto started to use the chemical for domestic and gardening works after branding it under the name of Roundup. This increased the use of glyphosate 200 times.
Many products that have been genetically modified in recent years are produced in a way that is compatible with these drugs. This causes the amount of glyphosate to rise to very high rates, especially in countries such as the USA.
