The ‘permanent daylight saving time application’ decision has been a matter of debate since the date it was taken. Since 1973, the clocks have been moved forward one hour at the end of March every year, but this practice changed in 2016. Although the purpose of this application is to “save energy” and “to benefit more from daylight”, some of the people are quite uncomfortable with this application.

People always express their discomfort about starting the day with darkness and going to work or school on social media. According to the latest information, the government will keep the street lighting off for another 45 minutes within the framework of this application with a new decision. The psychological and economic effects of the application also cause reactions from the opposition wing.

There was a reaction from İBB President Ekrem İmamoğlu:

This development, which fueled the discussions about the permanent daylight saving time, came to the fore with the letter of instruction sent by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources to electricity distribution companies. Allegedly, the Ministry sent an instruction to turn the street lights off 30 minutes earlier and turn on 15 minutes later in the evening.

This application, which is expected to come into effect in the coming days, will cause the streets to remain dark for a total of 45 minutes. Ekrem İmamoğlu, Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, draws attention to the problems that this decision, taken on the current difficult conditions, will create.
