With Sony’s solving the supply shortage, it also sees a significant increase in the sales of PlayStation 5 consoles. The company announced its second record-breaking quarter, selling 6.3 million PS5s in the last quarter, compared to 2 million units last year.

The new sales bring the total to 19.1 million for the fiscal year 2022, allowing the company to exceed even its own estimate of 18 million. Meanwhile, Sony has sold 38.4 million PS5s since the console’s launch in late 2020.

But on the software side, the news is not looking so good for Sony. Game sales are down from 70.5 million a year ago to 68 million and are still at a lower level for the fiscal year (264.2 million compared to 303.2 million in FY 2021). The number of PlayStation Network users fell from 112 million in the previous quarter to 108 million, but PS Plus subscriptions increased only slightly.

Overall, the Gaming and Network Services division saw a huge revenue increase, with revenue rising from 665 billion yen ($4.9 billion) the previous year to 1.073 trillion yen ($7.9 billion).

The company is confident that this rise will continue in the coming period and forecasts a 7 percent increase in revenue for the 2023 fiscal year. Hardware sales, including peripherals, are predicted to increase, but for now, there’s no word on PlayStation VR2 results.
