Indonesia announced that after the natural disaster in the country, most of the 10 million people did not have access to clean water and had to rely on wells to consume potable water. Announcing that the capital city of Jakarta had begun to sink into the Java Sea, the country’s administration had therefore decided to change the capital of the country. The Indonesian government, which came to the fore with such an interesting decision, has taken a ban decision that will anger its game-loving citizens.
The Indonesian government recently issued a new internet regulation without a payment commitment window. With the published regulation, technology, internet and game companies that want to operate in the country must officially register with the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies. In addition, content that disrupts public order must be removed from the platform.
“The bans were brought to protect users”
According to the official website of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies, many internet services such as Google, Tencent, Amazon managed to fulfill the provisions enacted by the government by Friday. However, many companies such as Steam, Epic Games, Yahoo and PayPal could not fulfill the terms and conditions set by the government within the specified time and were therefore banned throughout the country.
Many Indonesian citizens shared on social media against this move of the government. However, Abrijani Pangerapan, Director General of the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Information, made a statement stating that the bans were introduced purely to protect internet users.
Indonesian users cannot access gaming platforms such as Steam, Epic Games, unless they connect with a VPN or change their DNS settings. Gaming is an important source of income for Indonesia, which is in the top 10 worldwide when it comes to monetizing and downloading games. What kind of steps the government and banned internet providers will take in the coming days is eagerly awaited.
