While the coronavirus continues to spread by gaining strength all over the world with its Omicron variant, new records in the number of cases showed itself again. With Omicron, questions such as “When will the epidemic end?” came up again. When and how will the epidemic end? Is Omicron showing we can live with COVID? Or will more dangerous variants arrive in 2022?
“As countries feel the Omicron wave, their health systems will be challenged. Most severe cases will be unvaccinated people. Once the Omicron passes through a country, it will see far fewer cases the rest of the year, so COVID can be treated more like seasonal flu. ”
“A more contagious variant is unlikely, but we were very surprised during this outbreak. Omicron will build up a lot of immunity for at least next year. Trevor Bedford tracks genetics really well. We may need to get an annual vaccination for COVID for a while. ”
Where do you think the source of SARS-CoV-2 is? What data do you want to see? Is this information important to prevent future spreads and epidemics?
“The data show that (SARS-CoV-2) came from a different species, as in most pandemics. People will continue to speculate on this, and we need to make sure labs are careful. There will be epidemics from other species, so we need to invest to be ready. ”
One of the biggest problems is online misinformation about vaccines, masks and other interventions on Facebook and other platforms. How do we deal with this challenge?
“Trusted authorities like WHO and CDC need more resources to detect the outbreak early (surveillance) and communicate better. Social media has lagged behind trying to get real information – there will be a lot of discussion about how to do it better. . .
People like you, me and Tony Fauci have been exposed to a lot of misinformation. I did not expect that. Some, like putting chips in the arms, just don’t make sense, why would I want to do that?”
Which scientific or technological breakthrough will make the biggest difference in ending the COVID pandemic?
“The vaccines we have prevent serious illness and death very well, but they miss two important things. First, they still allow infections and seem time-limited. We need vaccines that prevent re-infection and last for many years. #”
