Star Wars fans have been looking forward to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, developed by Respawn Entertainment, and the game will finally be released on both PC and consoles. The game is a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and chronicles the adventures of Cal Kestis.
Those who want to play the game on PS5, which will be released for PS5, Xbox Series X / S and PC on April 27, 2023, encountered an unexpected situation. Physical copies of the game require an additional download to start the game, and it’s a pretty big download.
Up to 100GB additional download required
An inscription on the game’s physical cover reads, “The physical version of this game requires an additional download to launch the game.” This means that the game is not fully contained on the disc.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has one of the largest PS5 file sizes ever. This isn’t a big surprise, as the maximum capacity of a Blu-ray on PS5 is around 100GB, and Respawn’s latest version is 147GB on PS5.
Depending on how much data is on the disc, you may need to download up to 100GB before even playing the physical version. We’re used to day one patches – but we hardly ever see a game request such a large download.
The reason for this situation has not been disclosed yet. However, it is estimated that such a decision was made, possibly due to last-minute updates or patches of the game. This seems to be an issue for players with no or slow internet connection. The developer could have made a two-disc physical copy like The Last of Us: Part II or Final Fantasy 7 Remake to avoid this issue. But EA seems to have decided to force a download instead.
