China: Balloon for scientific and meteorological purposes
US defense officials have announced that they believe the balloon, which has been seen over sensitive and important areas in recent days, is actually a high-altitude surveillance device. But China’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the balloon was used “mainly for meteorological” purposes. China added that it “regrets” that the balloon accidentally entered US airspace.
While the US media reported that the balloon was about the size of three buses, during the briefing held at the Pentagon, US defense officials described the detected device as a “spy balloon” and confirmed that it flew over some sensitive areas, including nuclear silos. Although it was on the agenda to drop the balloon with F-22 planes, this plan was not implemented, considering that the wreckage would harm people.
