A frightening frame went viral this year in Nikon’s annual Nikon Small World Photomicrography Contest. One of the photos in the competition, which awards microscopic photography, had a great impact on social media and terrified everyone who saw it.

The frame sent to the international competition bears the signature of Lithuanian photographer Eugenijus Kavaliauskas. Capturing an ant he found in the backyard of his house, Eugenijus created one of the most memorable photographs ever.

The photograph in question reveals the face of an ant, magnified 5 times under a microscope. The terrifying square shows small red eyes glowing with anger and a mouth full of crooked teeth. However, the owner of the photo does not agree.

“There is no terror in nature”

Eugenijus Kavaliauskas said he decided to take a photo of an ordinary ant in the garden of his house and he did not think that the photo would attract such a reaction from the jury and social network users. “There is no horror in nature,” says the Lithuanian photographer.

The ant photo, which made a huge impact, was published on the official website of the competition, but was not among the winners. You can see the photos that won the 2022 Small World Photomicrography Competition by Nikon on this website.
