Interpol is reportedly planning to strengthen its crackdown on crypto-related crimes by creating a dedicated section.
Interpol’s decision to set up a criminal unit is not its first attempt to track crypto crimes. Interpol has been working to learn more about cryptocurrency transactions and gain more expertise to detect it since 2015, with the aim of minimizing criminal activity on the darknet. As part of this work, he collaborated with security firm Trend Micro and intelligence startup S2W Lab.
Interpol Builds Special Team to Fight Crypto Crimes
Interpol, the world’s largest global police organization, has set up a special team in Singapore to help governments combat crypto crimes, Indian news agency Business Standard reported.
According to Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock, the lack of a legal framework for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin poses major challenges for law enforcement. Stock also said that often agencies are not properly trained and equipped to handle cryptocurrency crimes.
Stock, at the press conference before the 90th plenary meeting in Delhi, pointed out that cryptocurrency and cybercrime will be the main agenda topic at the plenary meeting in India.
